Founded on 16th October 1909, as commercial shipping was completing its transition from sail to steam, Steamship Mutual this year celebrates its centenary.
From modest beginnings, providing cover for small shipowners from around the Thames Estuary, over the last hundred years Steamship Mutual has grown to be one of the largest and most successful P&I Clubs in the world, currently writing premiums of over US$300 million across more than 50 countries.
Throughout its history, Steamship Mutual’s success has been founded on long term member relationships, many extending for 50 years or more, attracting a growing high quality membership. The Club has achieved this by focussing on providing top quality service through the efforts of a dedicated and highly qualified staff in its offices around the world. With their support and the continuing loyalty of its Members, Steamship Mutual is looking forward to its second century of service to shipping.
The fifth Board Meeting of the Club’s centenary year took place in Hong Kong.
Steamship Mutual has just published a book that tracks its growth from a small mutual club insuring the last of the coastal sailing ships to today’s position as a global insurer
