AMSTERDAM BOARD MEETING - 26/27 JANUARY 2009

The first Directors’ meeting of the Club’s centenary year took place in Amsterdam. Originally scheduled to take place in the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, the venue had to be changed following the terrorist attacks of last November. It is now planned that one of the 2010 board meetings will take place in Mumbai.

Directors travelled from as far as Australia, Korea, Taiwan, India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and the U.S., as well as Europe, to attend the meeting, demonstrating the truly international nature of the Club’s membership.

Laurie Brean

At the end of the first day’s meetings a dinner was held at the Amstel Intercontinental Hotel. At the dinner, a presentation was made to Laurie Brean QC to mark his retirement from the board, after 25 years of valued service. Over those years, Mr Brean (pictured left) has made a lasting contribution to the work of the of the boards of the Club and the Corporate Trustee, including serving as Chairman of the Club from 1990-92. On making the presentation, Otto Fritzner, Chairman of the Board, paid tribute to Mr. Brean as a pillar of the board and “a tireless and conscientious worker on the Club's behalf”.

Three new directors were appointed to the board: Mr Sven-Michael Edye of Sloman Neptun, Mr Carlos Madinabeitia of Tradewind Tankers and Mr Antonio Zacchello of Seaarland Shipping.

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Helen Doe of Exeter University who is researching the Club’s history for a commemorative book to be published later this year.
